Root Canal

A root canal  treatment is performed when the doctor removes the infected pulp and nerve in the root of the tooth, cleans and shapes the inside of the  root canal, then fills and seals the space. Afterward, your dentist will place a crown on the tooth to protect and restore it to its original function.

What Exactly Is a
Root Canal Treatment?

A Root Canal is an Endodontic treatment performed to remove the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth and roots, replacing it with biocompatible material (typically a rubber-like substance) to prevent further damage to the tooth. A temporary filling will be placed in the first appointment, to protect the tooth during the healing process. In a second appointment is usually necessary to place a crown on the tooth.

Signs That You Need a Root Canal

If you are in extreme pain or you have an abscess this is usually the first sign that you will need a Root Canal treatment. You can also feel severe pain when biting down on something.

You may also notice sensitivity to heat and cold, tenderness, tooth discoloration, and swelling and tenderness in the surrounding area and the lymph nodes.

How is a root canal done?

A root canal is performed when the endodontist removes the infected pulp and nerve in the root of the tooth, cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal, then fills and seals the space. Afterward, your dentist will place a crown on the tooth to protect and restore it to its original function.

Can root canal treatment save a tooth?

Root canal therapy works by cleaning and shaping the inside of the tooth, then refilling and sealing the root canal to prevent bacteria from creating further infection. A root canal can save a tooth by helping to prevent further decay and restoring the tooth the normal function. A crown is placed to protect the inside of the tooth, in most cases returning the tooth to normal permanently.

Root Canal Treatment recovery and aftercare

If you follow our directions you shouldn’t have any problems with your recovery. We strongly recommend that you stick to liquids for a few hours and your your mouth no longer feels numb. After that you can incorporate solid foods into your diet that are soft, like a broth.

You usually receive prescription for an antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection and a painkiller just to prevent that you feel too much pain. Try to avoid brushing or flossing around the affected tooth. You should avoid smoking too.

How much does a root canal cost?

The cost varies depending on how complex the problem is and which tooth is affected. Molars are more difficult to treat; the fee is usually more. Most dental insurance policies provide some coverage for endodontic treatment.

Generally, endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth are less expensive than the alternative of having the tooth extracted.

The root canal treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges. A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed.

If you are experiencing tooth pain, it’s important to see a dentist as soon as possible, as you may need endodontic work or another procedure. If left untreated, infected pulp may cause the loss of the tooth.
